Trying to discover the essence of FCP/CCA’s brand, I kept coming back to this community-minded mission of the organization. The Center hosts a number of events every month, so I came up with with a series of calendars that could be printed three times a year. Rather than relying on unreliable or mediocre photography, I made the template easier and more enjoyable for a designer to work with, letting a single color represent each month, and allowing expressive typography tell the story. I devised a system of fonts (8 weights of Bodoni for numerals, and all available weights of one serif and one sans serif) and a set of rules for the way they are used with and against each other. The result is something that a good designer can take incredible liberty with, and still execute well.
